Andy Hill

In June 2017, I will be taking on the River Thames in a kayak. Travelling 30 miles a day, we will be leaving Lechlade, Gloucestershire on 17th June and (hopefully) arriving at Tower Bridge 5 days later on the 21st June. If paddling 150 miles wasn't grueling enough, there's 45 locks to contend with en-route to a turbulent tide in London. It's all in aid of The British Heart Foundation in memory of a little hero called Finn. The target is to raise £10,000 to fund research into the UK's biggest killer - Heart Desease (whilst looking after our hearts in the process).

Congenital Heart Defects (CHD's) are the most common form of birth defects in UK, affecting 1 in every 125 babies born. Thanks to critical research, the number of children who survive being born with a heart defect has improved dramatically in recent years. In 1961 only 20% lived to their first birthday. Now the number of children dying has fallen by more than 80%, but CHD's are still the No. 1 cause of death from a birth defect - killing twice as many children as cancer every year.

In later life, Coronary Heart Disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Before the British Heart Foundation there was no treatment for heart attacks and heart surgery was 10x more risky than it is today. We've come a long way, millions of people are alive thanks to the British Heart Foundation - but there's much more to do.

It's such an exciting time for research. Scientists funded by the British Heart Foundation are looking at ways to mend broken hearts with regenerative medicine. They're inventing new materials to make safer and longer lasting heart valves, exploring ways to reduce organ transplant rejection - and that's just the beginning.

Please join us in supporting this lifesaving research by sponsoring me as I Kayak the Thames in June 2017. All donations are secure and go directly to the British Heart Foundation Research Fund.
