Alan Smith

Welcome to the Gift of Hope Heart Fund which has been set up in memory of Alan. This fund has been set up to raise money for the British Heart Foundation to help them in their fight against heart disease. I hope you can join me in fundraising for the nation's heart charity - nobody is doing more than the BHF to keep the nation's hearts beating. Please make an online donation if you can. Thank you.Eulogy by Matthew SmithDad never liked speaking in public either. I can only hope that in addition to this I have also inherited some of his many wonderful qualities. It is not possible to fully do justice to the man that he was in so few words, so I am just going to give a few examples of my own memories of him.He was ever-patient and always there for us.He would test me on my French vocabulary, Latin conjugations or scientific formulae the night before a test.He would watch me play rugby, and every try I scored or tackle I made was that bit more special if he had seen it.For better or worse, his dry sense of humour is largely responsible for my own.He taught me never to get drunk on port.He taught me how to drive, and I remember with pride the stories of the time when he reversed his lorry down an alley and the foreman gave him a tip for the time he had saved them as nobody had been able to get down there before, and the time he reversed an 11-foot-wide load through an 11-foot-wide doorway, having had to remove the chains from the trailer so that it would fit. There were also the little things:His predilection for Thorntons toffee, and cups of tea - with air bubbles, and his inexplicable appreciation of country music. And his slippers, which I would wear myself whenever I got the chance even though they were several sizes too big.He showed me the man I want to be. He was my Dad.
