Arthur (Billy) Powell

Hello, for those of you who don't know me, I am Chrissy. I'm Billy's eldest grand-daughter; To him, I'm Ratbag 1!

Grandad and Nannie decided not to have flowers at the service but instead ask people to donate to a cause close to both their hearts :-)

I was very lucky to be able to spend my younger years getting to know my Grandad; he was an intriguing man, with set ways and beliefs. Weekends would follow the same routines: take-away on a Friday, shopping on Saturday morning followed by a Western or the previous night's American Football. Sunday would then be a day of rest unless you were Nannie.

He loved his family unconditionally, and would be in his element when surrounded by them. There have been many times over my life he willingly took me in and asked no questions.

My fondest memories are of Christmas time; Grandad having baked his sausage rolls and mince pies. He loved it too, an excuse for his 'boys' and 'Ratbags' to be around, the house always decorated with tinsel galore, Christmas music playing from the kitchen. It would be the one day of the year where the telly would not go on, until the Queen's speech that is.

I remember the excitement and counting down my years until I was old enough to join the 'adults' for Christmas Cards Night. I say adults in inverted commas because once I could join, I found that they were anything but. But this is how I remember him best : Christmas night, sitting around the table.

He was so happy to be able to meet his grandchildren and great grandchildren, even if it wasn't for long enough.

He would be so proud of his sons. They have been truly amazing through this all: the doctors' visits, the hospital calls, pick-ups, drop-offs. The lack of films provided! I know he would be so proud of you both.

His family and friends were all he ever needed. We love you Grandad and miss you already.
