Welcome to the Gift of Hope Heart Fund which has been set up in memory of John Myers BEM. This fund has been set up to raise money for the British Heart Foundation to help them in their fight against heart disease, the cause of my Dad's death in January 2008. Over a period of time this Gift of Hope fund has developed with more and more challenges created to ensure a continual flow of donations to the British Heart Foundation. However, it was initially created to allow me to raise funds for my attempt to complete the toughest foot race on the planet, the Marathon Des Sables 2011.  - Marathon Des Sables 2011 Marathon Des Sables had been a great interest to me (John’s son Martin Myers), a decision to take on the challenge back in May 2008 following the passing of my father became a reality when I gained entry to the MDS 2011. A gruelling run/trek over the Sahara desert in North Africa, equivalent to approx 6 marathons over 6 days. In addition to that competitors have to carry water, food, sleeping bag and all equipment for the duration of the event, apart from a tent (set up by the organisers).  In April 2011 I successfully completed the event and managed to raise a good sum for the BHF.  As this is written the Gift of Hope fund total stands at £3393.14.  I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this.  For further details of the event and how I progressed can be seen on my old website: Current projects:  - John Myers BEM Golfing Society  The John Myers BEM Golfing Society was established in 2008 to celebrate John Myers’ passion for golf. Each year on the nearest Friday to what would have been his birthday (13th March) the society organises a charity golf day at Flamborough Head Golf Club. Monies raised at the event go to this Gift of Hope fund.  For further details on events please check out the website: or email @    - Kilty Runner During the MDS I ran in my sport kilt and became known as the Kilty Runner by my friends and family who followed my progress. I now find myself motivated to enter other events around the globe to test my mental and physical strength.  This is how the Kilty Runner project was born.  I'm not a professional athlete nor will I be a world beater but I do these events to raise funds for the charities I am involved in and to experience the highs and lows of ultra running.  For further details of my challenges and fundraising details please see my website:   or email me @   or view my progress via my blog at  I hope you can join me in fundraising for the nations heart charity, nobody is doing more than the BHF to keep the nations hearts beating. Please make an online donation if you can.
