Bobby's Memorial Cricket Match

Bob Hammond memorial match Sunday 25th August 2013 Match report: Cricketers from across the region came together on Sunday 25th August to pay tribute to a much missed team-mate, opponent and friend. Bob Hammond, who played for several clubs in Hertfordshire and was a member of the county's over-50s side, died suddenly in November. He had been captain and chairman of Hare Street and the Hormeads CC for more than two decades, and the club staged a match between the current team and Bobby's Dazzlers - a side made up of people who had played cricket with and against Bob over the years.

Bobby's Memorial Game September 2015

The third annual Bob Hammond memorial match was played on the August bank holiday Sunday, and - in this season most of all - we were delighted just to get an afternoon without interruption. The weather forecast through the week had been truly apocalyptic - the only break in the relentless heavy rain expected to be provided by thunderstorms. But as the weekend neared the meteorologists gradually changed their minds, and although the Monday was washed away in cascading torrents, all we got at The Meads on Sunday was a few spots of moisture carried in on a cool breeze. Maybe it was down to the four magpies that were hopping around on the outfield as people began to arrive: or maybe the cricketing gods - and doubtless Hammond Snr - were smiling down on us.
