Gary Boyes

Gary was first diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) over a decade ago and managed it through medication whilst he lived a normal life - getting up and going to work every day until his retirement in 2018. He supported the British Heart Foundation throughout this time.

Eventually the symptoms worsened to the point that surgery was the only solution. The septum thickening has started to impact on one of the valves and even walking the short distance to the bus stop that he'd done every day for about 40 years required a rest-stop.

This still didn't stop him getting around and at Christmas he finally had his full family together for the first time - two grandkids over from Melbourne together with the two grandkids from the other side of London - and spent time playing with them, going to the West End with them and even reliving old times with a trip to the Panto!

Surgery finally came around in May and 10 days post op everything was looking on the up.

Nothing however prepared us for an unexpected sudden deterioration of his condition, and our rush back to hospital to find out that he'd had a heart attack, the subsequent night in the hospital waiting room, and the nightmare of him passing away on the morning of Sunday 19th May.

We hope that through the research that the BHF supports there is a chance that others can be spared the heartache that we've been through, and that they get the time to make some more memories with their loved ones.
